The Ongoing Chilean Protests in their Political and Historical Context
For over a month now the news has been flooded by reports concerning Chile due to civil unrest, protests and riots. Before the country became the subject of global media attention, it was praised for its relative social stability and economic progress compared to other Latin American countries. However, with over 3,7 million people flooding the streets and protesting against the increased cost of living in general, privatization, corruption and inequality, this success story becomes problematic. Moreover, on the 15th of November nearly all political parties represented in the National Congress signed an agreement calling for a national referendum, which will take place in April 2020, regarding the creation of a new Constitution.
It is clear that this is just the beginning of a turbulent period for Chile and it remains to be seen in what ways Chilean society will change. But, putting the future aside, what are the deeper roots of these protests? What caused them and how are we to understand them in light of Chile's recent history? These questions and more will be addressed in this talk.
